How to accept credit & debit cards on food trucks

Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race captured the explosion of gourmet food trucks, particularly in Southern California.

There are three reasons why food trucks might consider accepting credit and debit cards:

  • Increased sales
  • Customer convenience
  • Less cash on hand

Increased sales: With exception of loyal followers of food trucks on Twitter, food truck purchases tend to be spontaneous. Customers spend more and spend spontaneous when they use their credit or debit card.

Customer convenience: More and more people are carrying less cash and preferring to use their credit or debit cards.  Asking cashless customers to find an ATM, and pay up to $5.00 in ATM fees can be a headwind to sales. In addition, many customers using an expense account are required to use their corporate card.

Less cash on hand: Food trucks can be easy targets for robbery due to their location at night, and large quantities of cash. Credit or debit card transactions are safe from robbery (or employee theft).

By definition, food trucks do not have access to landline phone lines to process credit & debit cards.  Today’s wireless technology allows merchants to accept credit and debit cards on their food truck at almost any location.
